Amid waves of unionization and labor strikes spread across the globe, the workers’ revolution has made its way to the North Pole, introducing what many in the Arctic Circle have dubbed “The Woke Mind-Virus” to the Elven community. The Elves — formerly referred to as “Santa’s Elves” — have banded together, packed up their comically curved-toed slippers and abandoned their bourgeois oppressor.
“These problems have really been present for centuries,” Papa Elf said in an interview with Arctic Today. “But it wasn’t until Mr. Claus came back from a multicontinent trip to Starbucks for his yearly iced sugar cookie almond milk iced latte that us Elves began to realize the depth of the corruption. The morning after he returned, we got word from Dasher and Dancer that they found a crumpled-up propaganda poster in his sleigh.”
The poster, later explained in simple terms by humanoid snowman Frosty, detailed a manifesto urging people to reconsider their choice to support large corporations who treat their employees unfairly — Starbucks and Target being the highest on this boycott list.
“I mean, it really made us look deeper into what we’ve been going through for ages,” Holly Berry, Papa Elf’s bride-to-be, said.
“It all just exploded from there,” Papa Elf continued. “Us Elves found a way to connect to the interconnected computer network — something we haven’t felt the need to do since the fall of 2001 — and did some more digging.”
That deeper digging brought to life a startling realization: the Elves had been treated horribly by Mr. Claus for centuries on end.
“Starbucks was just the tip of the iceberg,” rocking chair specialist Tinsel Mae said. “They were complaining about their wages being too low, but heck, we’ve never even had wages to begin with!”
“I created a union, of course,” Papa Elf said. “It’s just the first step, but I think it will really send the message that we’re taking this seriously.”
When Mr. Claus caught wind of this rebellion, he sent Rudolph to the picket line outside the Workshop to try to talk the Elves down.
“It’s classic Santa to pit us against each other. We didn’t take Rudolph seriously, of course — we all knew there was something sultry going on between him and the boss, it was impossible to miss,” Papa Elf said.
The Elves’ activism snowballed into what Mr. Claus’ officials later called “a highly regrettable misunderstanding brought about by excessive exposure to mainland ideologies,” but what the Elves proudly described as “finally reading theory.”
“We cracked open a PDF of ‘The Communist Manifesto’ on an old Blackberry we found frozen in a snowbank,” Gumdrop Pete said, adjusting his newly acquired “Workers Unite” beanie. “It changed everything. When Marx wrote about alienation from labor, I felt that in my tiny, frostbitten toes.”
Soon the Elves began to look beyond their working conditions, interrogating the entire scaffolding of what they had confidently dubbed the “so-called Christmas” industrial complex. They questioned why one jolly man was allowed to surveil billions of children across the world and maintain a global monopoly on toy distribution while insisting he was “just a humble giver.”
“Let’s be real,” said Jingle J. Jangle, a spokeselve for the Elves’ new political advocacy group, The Inter-National Society for Elven Liberation (TINSEL). “The naughty-or-nice list is a tool of capitalist discipline. Santa weaponized Judeo-Christian morality to maintain control over global consumers and his own unpaid workforce. It’s textbook cultural hegemony.”
In response to their achievement of collective class consciousness, Elves also began reexamining the holiday’s cultural mythos.
“That red suit? It’s sponsored by Coca-Cola. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Christmas is basically a seasonal ad campaign with hymns,” Papa Elf said.
At a heated press conference, Mr. Claus attempted damage control by insisting he was “listening deeply” and considering “introducing candy breaks.” TINSEL responded by issuing a statement reading, “We do not negotiate with sugar-addled tyrants.”
Negotiations stalled when Mr. Claus threatened to automate his entire production line with mechanical nutcrackers powered by advanced AI. In retaliation, the Elves staged a dramatic walkout, holding signs reading “Ho Ho No!” and “Liberate the North Pole.”
The movement has since spread. Seeking both ideological safety and higher education, Tinsel Mae announced she has migrated south to Lewis & Clark to study SOAN and gender studies as the first of presumably many Elves to flee the so-called Christmas regime.
