Basketball was something I have only ever been moderately interested in — that is, until a blonde, toned 6-foot-tall goddess took over my social media pages with her signature jump shot. Paige Bueckers, also known as “Paige Buckets,” is not just dominating college basketball, she is also taking over the culture with her insane talent on the court, effortless beauty and magnetic personality. So, Paige, consider this is me shooting my shot.
Bueckers plays for the University of Connecticut, also known as the UConn Huskies. There, she made history as the first freshman to win a major national player of the year award, and led her team to the Final Four in 2021. Despite battling a torn ACL that sidelined her junior season, Bueckers made a powerful comeback the following year. She earned first-team All-American honors and, once again, led the Huskies to the Final Four in 2024.
Aside from her evident talent, her frequent appearances in headlines, along with her massive Instagram following of 2 million, clearly indicate the fascination she sparks. At 19, she won the Best College Athlete in Women’s Sports award at the 2021 ESPYs. Instead of making her acceptance speech about herself, she used her moment in the spotlight to call out and recognize racial disparities in sports media. With the platform she has, she pushed for more recognition and opportunities for Black athletes, and the clip quickly went viral.
But Bueckers did not stop there. An NIL deal allows college athletes to earn money from their name, image and likeness through endorsements and sponsorships. After she signed major NIL deals, she has made it a point to uplift her teammates and advocate for minority creators in brand partnerships. Even as conversations about race have become more divided, she has stayed firm in her mission. Paige is not just making waves in basketball, but she is using her influence to push for a real change.
Keeping it real for a quick side note, Paige Bueckers is absolutely stunning. With her striking blue eyes and sharp jawline, the fifth-year senior easily has the face of a model. What makes her even more captivating is that she also puts up insane numbers on the basketball court. Not to diminish her hard work by focusing on her looks, but there is something about watching her dominate the game with such confidence and skill that makes her even more attractive. She has that rare combination of beauty, athleticism and charisma that is hard to ignore — and it is a big reason why so many people are drawn to her.
No matter if you have seen her through basketball, fashion week, in TikTok edits or in interviews, there is no denying that Bueckers is everywhere. Whether she is breaking records on the court, or breaking hearts off it (mostly mine), she has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. Her versatility on the court, as well as her humble confidence during interviews, has made her not just a household name, but a true cultural icon. It is not just her game that captivates so many; it is the way she carries herself, constantly challenging the status quo and paving her own path, inspiring an entire new generation to dream big. Bueckers is not only a basketball star, but an influencer who is changing the way we think about what it means to be a role model in today’s world.
